In the fall of 2015 I had the unique opportunity to lead a series of improv workshops for an orthodox temple looking to hold workshops that would help their community grow closer together. It was pretty challenging because they didn't want any touching to happen between the men and women in the workshop but they still wanted a team bonding experience.
Another challenge was that they wanted the workshop on a Saturday at a Hilton hotel across the street from their synagogue. Because of their faith they intended to walk to the hotel. They wondered how my instructor, based in NYC, would get there. When I explained they would either take a train or drive they found this to unsuitable, for although the instructor was not jewish they didn't want to cause him to drive.
As a solution we had him travel to the hotel early Friday morning and check in for the night. Then he was able to wake up at the hotel and begin the workshop the next morning. He also stayed there until the nexty morning.
For the workshop we carefully created a curriculum that was lots of fun but that allowed for participants to never touch. Touching was allowed between members of the same sex, but not between them.
This worked great and the workshop was a large success.
